In ancient Rome, people knew that strawberries were not only delicious but also medicinal. They were believed to help with melancholy, fainting, and all kinds of inflammations, as well as blood and liver diseases. In ancient times, strawberries were also believed to have mystical powers, and young girls in particular would dream of strawberries as it meant they would have many healthy children. In Slovenia, as well as garden strawberries, we also have wild strawberries, which grow on forest paths, clearings, and along forest edges up to a height of 2 200 m, which means that they can also be found in the mountains. They flower from April to June, and the flowers are soon followed by the extremely tasty red fruits, which are only a fingernail’s breadth in size and have many medicinal properties.
In addition to the fruit, the leaves, and the roots are also medicinal, which is why we call the wild strawberry a true tiny healer and classify it as a medicinal plant.
