The daisy is one of the tiny meadow flowers whose loveliness earned it the early affection of poets and poetically inclined lovers. Many girls still secretly pick the white flowers and wonder: loves me, loves me not, loves me, loves me not… In antiquity, the daisy was a symbol of spring, of nature’s awakening in spring, and of the happiness that always captures people’s hearts again after a long winter. Daisies were the traditional floral decoration of Flora, the Roman goddess of spring and spring vegetation, and like many other flowers symbolizing love, they are also dedicated to the Greek Aphrodite and the Roman Venus. The shape of the flower, which resembles a ray of sunshine, is why the daisy was called ‘sponsa solis’ – the bride of the sun – as early as the 13th century. It also earned this name because its flower opens only when the sun shines on it.
When the sun goes down, the flowers close again and await a new morning.
