The effects of opium, which was cultivated in ancient high cultures, have always made the poppy a symbol of deep sleep and oblivion. On the other hand, the abundance of seeds that ripen in a single poppy head makes it a traditional symbol of abundance, wealth and fertility. Like all spring flowers, the bright red flowers of the field poppy are a harbinger of spring awakening and a sign of love; moreover, they are the very image of the fire of love. But at the same time, the poppy also represents the fragility and transience of love, which can be as short-lived as a freshly plucked poppy flower. The poppy was also a favorite witch’s herb in the Middle Ages and, as such, a metaphor for the night, dark forces, and witchcraft.
