Hops are a climbing plant known to the ancient Romans, who used them mainly as a vegetable but also used the stems to make wickerwork, especially baskets. In the Middle Ages, it was also used for medicinal purposes, especially for ‘purifying the blood’, and its calming effects are still appreciated today, especially for all forms of restlessness, anxiety, nervousness, and irritability. It also has a beneficial effect on sleep disorders, and it is recommended that people suffering from insomnia make scented pads and fill them with dried hops (to which melissa, lavender, and valerian can also be added) to help them sleep better and easier. Since the 8th century, hops have also been cultivated to make beer. It is added not so much for its distinctive flavor as for its properties in preventing beer from souring. In Slovenia, hops are grown mainly in the Savinja Valley, where several hop varieties have been cultivated since the beginning of the 19th century.
