The basis for Slovenian traditional national costume is the national costume from Gorenjska. It is considered a kind of “all-Slovenia”, as it has been adopted by many folklore groups and national entertainment ensembles and is most often depicted as a tourist souvenir. Although the Gorenjska costume differs from village to village, the various performances share certain characteristics.
The women wear a white shirt with wide sleeves, a large colorful scarf with fringes, a pleated skirt and an apron. Around the hips is a joint or a colorful ribbon with a bow. On the head is a richly decorated avba avba. Men’s Gorenja costume is quite uniform in cut. It consists of trousers made of cloth or dyed linen, a white shirt with a collar, and a waistcoat (preferably) with many brass buttons. On the head is a hat with wide brims.
