If you often visit mountains, you may have seen the edelweiss, a beautiful flower that grows mainly on remote and inaccessible rocky terrain, in rock cervices and rubble, at altitudes between 1800 and 3000 meters.
In the past, it was considered a precious loot, a kind of trophy that during mountain conquerors would bring as a gift to their wives. That is why, at the initiative of mountain lovers, it was protected in several Alpine countries, in Slovenia as early as 1896. Its blossom has 5 to 6 small yellow clustered spikelet-florets, that is why some people call it ‘očnica’ (the eye socket). Elsewhere, its name is associated with its white color, as the yellow blossom is surrounded by velvety white star-shaped petals. In Germanic languages, the name edelweiss is used, which is derived from the words edel (noble) and weiß (white).
