Lujo Vodopivec
Lujo Vodopivec studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts (ALU) in Ljubljana and completed a sculpture specialization under Professor Drag Tršar. He continued his studies at the New York Studio School in the USA, and after returning to Ljubljana, he was a full-time professor at the ALU for many years, all the while working prolifically.
Despite his extensive and varied sculptural oeuvre, he is known to the general public mainly for his horses. Massive, figuratively static, and heavy clay horses symbolize strength, durability, dynamism, and endurance. They are recognizable by the author at first glance; actually Lujo Vodopivec’s trademark.
Different variations of Vodopivec’s horse adorn the Ljubljana fountain in front of the Union Hotel, and ceramic statuettes of different colours and sizes are available at SKRINA. Some of his works are also included in the permanent collection of the Modern Gallery in Ljubljana.
