Gustav Klimt – The Tree of Life graphic
The famous Tree of Life is associated with the name of the Belgian industrialist and art collector Adolf Stoclet, who in 1904 decided to paint his Stoclet mansion in Brussels and invited several artists to participate. The industrialist was fond of Japanese art, so Klimt decided to draw a suitable picture that would complement the overall design. The painting consists of three elements – Expectation, Fulfillment and the central motif – a stylized Tree of Life. The name carries a symbolic meaning and encourages the viewer to think: maybe the artist tried to depict the biblical tree of knowledge, maybe he had infinity in mind, as the branches meet and intertwine, creating a veritable labyrinth of leaves. The picture can also be viewed symbolically as a new beginning, positive energy, health and a bright future.
