Growing roses is part of our garden culture, but roses with a Slovenian origin and a Slovenian name have only been available for the last two decades.
The ‘Prešeren’ rose is the first Slovenian rose to be registered as a variety, and with it, we Slovenes officially became rose breeders.
It was bred by Dr Matjaž Kmecl, a well-known Slovenian literary historian, who in his spare time added to his love of roses by deliberate cross-breeding.
He has done this professionally and sensitively, combining the good qualities of four existing varieties, creating the father and mother plants by crossing them himself.
Prešeren is a shrubby pink rose with rather large flowers that can measure up to 12 cm across. Its sturdy buds with red-tinged leaf tips, which later turn pink, are something special in themselves.
The roses were planted by the Municipality of Bled in the Spa Park, in the center of Bled, and at Prešeren’s birthplace in Vrba. They are certainly worthy of their name.
