Vida Zupan – Kraška noša
In the second half of the 19th century, the women of Kraševka and the surrounding area dressed relatively richly compared to other Slovenian women, which was made possible by the proximity of Trieste. Women’s traditional Karst costume was characterized by sophisticated materials, cosiness, various decorations, often jewelry.
Wealth was expressed in the skirt, under which there were several petticoats and a ballerina (which made the girls’ buttocks bigger). The aprons were silk, of various colors, and some had a long, wide, silk ribbon tied in a bow at the side. They wore earrings, rings and brooches, which was not customary elsewhere. The headboard was decorated with handmade embroidery and lace. Some younger girls pinned a bouquet of flowers to their chest on special days.
The influence of the proximity to Trieste can also be felt in the men’s Karst costume. The men’s karst costume had many variations. Some men wore long trousers tucked into boots, a waistcoat and a long jacket. Knee-length pants, white socks and a vest without a jacket were also popular.
Most of the men wore hats, but some also wore straw hats decorated with flowers, and even more rarely, a fur headdress called a frkindish.
Only some characteristics of the karst costume are described.
