The central characters of the Cerkno ‘laufarija’ are represented by: ‘Pust’, ‘ta tirjasta’ (two Thread Men), ‘ta star’ (the Old Man), ‘ta stara’ (the Old Woman) and ‘ta mršlanast’ (the Ivy Man).
They are unique in Slovenia for their wooden masks, or wooden ‘larfe’. The central character is also a ‘lamant’, but he is the only one of the 23 characters who does not wear a wooden mask. His face is covered by a calf’s skin, he has horns on his head, and he is dressed in a fur coat and holding a pitchfork in his hands. The carnival mask looks friendly despite the fangs that stick out from the corners of the mouth. His clothes are covered in moss and he moves awkwardly in his heavy trousers. Even his small horns are covered with moss. In his hands he holds a spruce leaf, which ‘te smrekov’ (the Spruce Man) takes over after ‘lamant’s’ execution on Shrove Tuesday. The ‘Lavfarji’ then take ‘Pust’ to an unknown place and no one is allowed to go with him.
