Paintings from the chest
Peasant chests had the most luxurious paintings in Gorenjska region, where the oldest preserved peasant chest, bearing the venerable year 1624, is on display in Kranj Town Hall.
The motifs of the paintings were very varied, with flowers in chalices with or without handles and flower bouquets in baskets being particularly popular. Some of the flowers are recognisable as roses or carnations, lilies of the valley or tulips.
A common motif were also saints, who were usually personally connected to the owners and family members and represented their protectors (patrons).
A widespread and popular motif was St Florian, patron saint against fires; St Barbara and St George on a white horse slaying a dragon with a spear.
Like the chests, the paintings on the chests are now disappearing and can be classified as intangible cultural heritage at risk.
