LACE TABLECLOTHS AND NAPKINS

Bobbin lace testifies to the rich folk imagination and the diligence, precision and patience of the bobbin makers who sit for hours in front of the “punkelno” to create a small pattern. The production of bobbin lace in Carniola was first recorded by J. V. Valvasor as early as 1686. Bobbin making was for many decades the only source of income for many families, especially in poorer mining and hill farming areas. We have the first data on the earnings of lacemakers only from 1873, when they were said to have earned from 12 to 50 krajcars per day (a kilogram of better wheat bread cost 28 krajcars). Slovene lace, with centers mainly in Idrija, Žire and Železniki, is a co-creator of European cultural identity.
