“Pisanice” from Bela Krajina
I love you and I give you a »pisanica«
Slovenian Easter eggs are among Europe’s most beautifully decorated eggs – in particular »pisanice« eggs. The name pisanica derives from the word »pisa«, which means line, and refers to the geometric designs used to decorate “pisanica” in Bela Krajina ever since – in Adlešiče village.
In the past, pisanica was made mainly by girls, who traditionally used black and red colours. They often supplemented the patterns with a written verse (»So red pisanica as burning love«) and gave their most beautiful pisanica to their boyfriend.
Decorated eggs were also given to each other by relatives and friends.
The locals, who are trying to preserve the tradition simply call them »Pisanica from Adlešiči«.
