Klimt based the motif of Judith on the biblical story of the Jewish heroine Judith, who saves her people. The young and beautiful widow Judith goes to the Assyrian camp to meet the commander Holofernes. Enchanted by her beauty, he surrenders carelessly to her charms and drinks. When he falls asleep, Judita cuts off his head. Many artists who depicted Judith’s story wanted to show her courage and virtuous nature. In contrast to them, Klimt’s intention was not the credibility of the story, as Judith is portrayed extremely sensually and, according to some critics, too modern. As in most of the literature and art of the time, this is a hint that female sexuality can also mean something destructive. The model for Judith was Adele Bloch-Bauer.
