“ŠČURKOV SKEDENJ” (COCKROACH BARN)
Looking far into the past can teach and inspire us, especially in the field of folk traditions.
At the SKRINA Ethno Gallery, we are trying to keep it alive, which is why we have prepared a toy “Ščurkov skedenj” (a cockroach barn) for you, which the children made themselves in a rural setting.
During the grazing season, they passed the time by making various toys, most often out of linden and oak wood.
One of these is the cockroach barn puzzle, which is made of six boards carved in different ways and assembled in the shape of a stick flower. If the toy is taken apart, it is difficult to put it back together.
Although our taste has changed in many ways in recent decades, the cockroach barn is still an interesting didactic toy and proof that people’s lives in earlier times were richer than we imagine today.
