The basis for Slovenian traditional folk costume is the folk costume of Gorenjska. It is considered to be a kind of “national” costume, as it has been adopted by many folklore groups and folk entertainment ensembles and is most often portrayed as a tourist souvenir. Although Gorenjska’s costume varies from village to village, certain characteristics are common to the different versions. The women wear a white shirt with wide sleeves, a large colorful shawl with fringes, a ruffled skirt, and an apron. Around the hips is a cummerbund or a colorful ribbon with a bow. On the head is a richly decorated »avba«.
The costume of the Gorenjska men is quite uniform. It consists of trousers made of cloth or dyed linen, a white shirt with a collar, and a waistcoat »lajbč« with numerous brass buttons. On the head is a hat with a wide-brimmed brim.
These are just some of the features of the Gorenjska costume.
