Artists rarely have the opportunity to make a work in which they can express all their imagination and creativity without hindrance. The industrialist and art collector Adolphe Stoclet is one of the few art commissioners who have been able to indulge the artist’s ideas and allow his dreams to become reality. Thus, in the Stoclet mansion in Brussels, a magnificent mural was created, for which Klimt spent more than 6 years in his workshop. The painting is made up of three elements – Fulfillment, The Tree of Life, and Expectation.
Expectation represents a female figure trapped in a maze of triangles and Klimt himself considered that for the Stoclet Palace, he had reached “the final stage in his unraveling of ornament”. The central gold colour is considered by some critics to represent life, so the painting has not only an aesthetic value but a whole network of interpretations behind it.
