Adele Bloch-Bauer was the only woman whom the artist portrayed several times, she also posed for Judith with the head of Holofernes.
Her willingness to serve as Klimt’s model (at a time when such a woman was branded as a street woman) indicates an extremely intimate connection between them. Klimt depicted her in a royal posture. Her face and hands are as vivid as one could wish for a portrait, while the sumptuous background in gold and silver elevates her to divinity.
The painting was stolen by the Nazis in 1941, and after the war, the heirs fought for ownership for many years, and the movie “The Lady in Gold” starring Helen Mirren was also made about it.
