GOOD DAY BREAD
When the mother opened the bread oven, the whole house was fragrant, the warmth of the oven breathed a pleasant homeliness into the home.
Throughout history, bread has meant happiness and prosperity, while the lack of bread has meant misery, poverty, and war. In Slovenia, bread was first mentioned in the 13th century, and in the Middle Ages, the craft of baking developed in the markets and towns. In 1689, J.V. Valvazor described how bakers who cheated were punished – locked in special cages and soaked in the river. Bread is also associated with many proverbs and customs. “Ceremonial” bread accompanied a person from birth to death; bread was the first gift when a child was born, the bride left the house with bread, and she was welcomed with bread at her new home.
Cut your own piece of bread, whether it is “ceremonial” or “everyday” bread.
