In the Štajerska region, some older elements of dress and costume have been preserved among the people for quite a long time.
The skirts of the women’s national costumes were of different colours; green with red ribbon, blue with pink, brown with black, and the obligatory white underskirt. Whatever the colour of the skirt, the apron was almost always blue. The costume also consisted of white stockings, gathered at the ankle. It was preferable to have them as frilly as possible – the more frilly stockings, the wealthier the girl. Black shoes were often decorated with a buckle.
Men wore dark trousers made of woolen cloth and a waistcoat made of home-made linen on working days. On their days off, they wore a cap and a hat over their industrial cloth sleeveless shirts.
An alternative to knee-high boots was ‘half-boots’, which reached down to the ankles.
These are just some of the features of Štajerska costume.
