“I show up for the boy in the colourful outfit”
The Gorenjska women’s costume has many internal variations, but the basic consists of a white linen shirt, a large colorful shawl with fringes draped around the shoulders and pinned at the front by a belt, and an ankle-length skirt. Girls used to wear one or more ruffled petticoats under the skirt to make them look more lustful, richer, and desirable. Sometimes unmarried girls wore a headdress, mostly an »auba«.
Men wear a short waistcoat with embroidered flowers and metal buttons over a white shirt, or a short jacket with long sleeves. The trousers, so-colled »irharce« were made from leather and paired with high boots. On the head, they wore a low cap or a wide hat, depending on the region. A large red and colorfully bordered umbrella were called Kranjska marela or »Židani parazol«.
These are just some of the features of Gorenjska’s costume.
