Gustav Klimt – Lady with a fan graphic
Women were always the center of Klimt’s art, he depicted them as Greek priestesses or goddesses, adding gold paint, semi-precious stones and corals to them, and thereby achieved an extraordinary effect that marked a novelty in the art of portraiture.
“Lady with a Fan” is one of the artist’s two last paintings, when Klimt died it was still on the easel in his studio. The seductive lady gazes into the distance with extreme confidence, her body radiating subtle eroticism. She is dressed in a loose, kimono-like dress decorated with Chinese dragon motifs, and a Phoenix visible in the background acts as an extension of her hairstyle. The phoenix, a symbol of immortality and rebirth, is joined by a heron and a crane, Asian symbols of luck and loyalty.
