Once upon a time, when our ancestors were afraid in winter that the sun might not return one day, evergreens were especially revered. They were believed to have a special life-giving power as they resisted the dying of nature and symbolized immortality, hope, and eternal life. The belief in the magical power of evergreens, intertwined with Christian symbolism, lives on today and the decorated evergreen tree worshipped by the ancients has survived as a Christmas tree. Ivy has a special place among evergreens, climbing up the trunks and canopies of trees. Our ancestors used ivy to chase away demons during the dangerous time between the New Year and the Old Year. Its twigs were woven into garlands to represent something that has no beginning or end, that does not die even in winter and remains unchanged in eternity.
