The spruce<\/em><\/strong>, an evergreen tree that never loses its life despite winter and cold, is the most abundant tree species in Slovenia. Our ancestors worshipped it as a symbol of eternity<\/em><\/strong> and decorated their dwellings with spruce, and to this day it retains a central role at Christmas time. Peeled and placed in the middle of the village, the spruce tree once stood for the honor and pride of the village community, the protection of the village, the man’s home, and his family. People still put up maypoles on important occasions, celebrations, and festivities, as it is a visible symbol of growth, health, prosperity, and fertility<\/em><\/strong>.
\nAlthough to the casual observer the spruce may look dull, with no beautiful spring flowers or colorful autumn leaves to be seen on its shoots, it has other attractive features – most notably its magnificent cones<\/em><\/strong>. The cones, which are initially green and hard-packed, turn brownish in autumn and are very decorative, so they can be a beautiful and inexpensive decoration for your home.<\/h5>\n
