In 1837, a farmer from Polhov Gradec brought a flowering twig from the mountain to Count Blagay<\/em><\/strong>, a nobleman and native of Kranj, Rihard Ursini.\u00a0 As the Count was not familiar with the plant, he sent it to botanists at the Regional Museum in Ljubljana for “identification”, where they confirmed that it was an unknown wolfsbane and named it Blaga’s wolfsbane<\/em><\/strong> (Daphne blagayana) after the finder. In Europe at the time, the new species was a botanical sensation and the following year (1838) King Frederick Augustus II<\/em><\/strong> of Saxony, a keen botanist, came to see it. To commemorate the royal visit and the discovery of the Blagay’s wolfsbane, Count Blagay built a monument at the foot of Mount Polhov Gradec<\/em><\/strong>, more than four meters high, which is an important part of our cultural heritage, and the Blagay’s wolfsbane has been nicknamed the King’s Flower<\/em><\/strong>. Only 30 centimeters tall, the evergreen shrub bears yellowish-white flowers that are not at first sight showy but are nevertheless worthy of admiration. In March and April, they also attract us with their pleasant scent.<\/h5>\n
