The human fish sculpture is modeled after the mysterious underground animal first mentioned by Janez Vajkard Valvasor. In 1689, he described the "dragon cubs" of Vrhnika in The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola. However, only decades later (1768), by exploring underground caves, it was scientifically described by J.N. Laurenti and named white marsh (Proteus anguinus). In Slovenia, there is also the black marsh harrier (Proteus anguinus parkland harrier).
