Plečnik’s horse

The National and University Library (NUK) was founded by decree of Empress Maria Theresa in 1774.
In this decree, the books that had been saved when the Jesuit College in Ljubljana burnt down were given to the Ljubljana Lyceum Library for general use.
The plans for the new library were drawn up in 1930-31 by the architect Jože Plečnik.
The sculpture of the horse is recreated after the brass doorknob that adorns the main entrance and was designed by the architect himself. It is a protocol gift.
