The Kiss is Klimt’s most famous painting and is considered the peak of his “golden period”, where the luminous geometric ornament threatens to swallow the lover. The figures are embraced by abundant silver, gold, and platinum leaf, and the couple kneels on a beautiful flower mound. The men’s cloak consists of black and white rectangles, their angularity is the exact opposite of the women’s garment in a pink pattern, which is soft and colorful. This fairy-tale and for that time unusual decoration blends in a sophisticated way with emotion into a perfect whole.
Klimt was devoted to experimentation in his paintings and liked dealing with the vague line between the psychic inner world and the outer reality.
